Given that your tongue is of normal length and considering the distance between your oral orifice and your knees and elbows, I find it amazing how this could be the case.

Geometry, PT! The angle of delfection of your elbow is such that it does not come in tangent with your tongue....unless that tongue can stretch to about a foot long.

Because the spine wasn't meant to bend that way.
The spine can bend to a total of 100+ degrees downward, but isn't supposed to twist in the angle that is required for a person to be able to lick his elbow. But if I keep trying, I'd probably get a bad enough scoliosis to permit me to lick my elbows. Hehe.

Because I don't have the neck of an ostrich. I can only go as far as licking my knees but not my elbows. Gee, if I could only do that, it would be truly amazing!

Because there is a deady venom activated by the active cultures of saliva when it interacts with elbow dust. So, its really just to save our lives. If you research this closely, you will find that as an adaptation, humans with short forearms have short tongues. Humans with long tongues have very long forearms. Kinda to help replicate the species.

it is not a question of distance but rather of mobility. considering that the feet can be moved by different joints to get it closer to lips while only your shoulder joint can move your elbow nearer.

maybe because if you bend your arms its longer and your tongue cant reach it and the knee well........you can reach it with your tongue
