These thugs stab people because they can. There are virtually no police around and, even, if they end up in court they'll have a slap on the wrist or a short prison sentence.
The Government has no interest in fighting crime. It releases prisoners early rather than build more prisons and appears, in general, to favour criminals rather than victimes.

I retired from the police 9 years ago but the policy then was to caution first offenders in virtually every instance for what was considered fairly "minor" crime. That included the Bladed Instrument and Offensive Weapon legislation covering knives.
My personal view (having been stabbed once myself) was that EVERY person who carried an illegal knife was a potential murderer and that it was NOT a minor offence: thus, I would NEVER caution for this offence, directing that they be charged and go to court.
However, the CPS used to send them back with an instruction to caution.
Carrying knives has thus been seen as a fairly minor matter for at least 9 years and in reality much longer. It is therefore part of the culture of young people that it is no big deal to carry a knife because the chances of being caught are virtually negligible and, even if you are, the likely result is a caution. Then, when a knife-carrying youth gets into a tricky situation it is only a short step to get the knife out and use it.
Discipline and law and order is in a sorry state and our society, in some areas, is in serious danger of breaking down entirely, if it hasn't already. I know it's not going to happen because there are virtually no patrolling police officers any more, but a zero tolerance policy on ALL crime is the only way we can claw our way back from where we are at the moment.

The first is to make parents responsible for their children and know where they are. It's no good anymore saying well they do what they like, not when you have ten year old carrying weapons and youngsters getting stabbed and shot there has to be more parental input. All schools to have security in place, now is the time I'm afraid to put security guards on gates, search them all, this will take time, but ANYONE caught carrying a weapon gets reported to the police. A monthly amnesty by the police to give youngsters the opportunity to hand weapons in, if not and caught with one, automatic jail. Doesn't have to be long, just enough to give them something to think about. It's also about time we started boot camps, for offenders, not military places, but ones similar to those in the US. All privileges have to be earned, all authority is respected and in total control, and everyone has to do their bit for themselves and for others in the group. Teach them responsibility and pride and maybe we will stop some of our youths from becoming just another victim.

In the not too distant past in Britain, schoolchildrens ability was monitored frequently , as in are they coping with normal schooling. If they were not ,we had special schools, to which children who needed to proceed at a slower pace than normal could go. These schools were closed in the name of equality, but this has left thousands of children , who would have benifited from this type of education, reaching teen years, unable to read or write. And totally angry and frustrated. They are not equipped to work in the present day rat race, and they have not had an education which has benefited them in any way. They huddle together, finding like friendship, ostracised, sad people, who the society which supported their need for ordinary education does not understand. The teaching leaders must see this, and also the tragedy it is visiting upon so many people.

We really can't. The police have lost control of the streets (which may have something to do with the last time I saw a police man down my street, he was blocking the one-way road with his car, whilst his mate went shopping for sandwiches). Also, these people's parents obviously don't care what their children are doing, getting involved in gangs, and killing each other. I mean, parents have no control over their children, because since they were born, they have been scared of them. Go into any supermarket and you will hear some useless mother begging her two year old to stop crying. Seriously, if you have to plead and bribe them to behave at that age, is it really any suprise they can't control their children once they're any older than ten?

I think that everyone in their own community, has to take a stand now. This young yobs rule
society must be stopped.
I don't mean we should confront them, but they
should be reported if seen to carry weapons.
They have no respect for anyone, and I am fed
up of hearing their excuses,we are bored, there
is nothing to do. So killing someone out of spite
and anger is not okay!!
Stop them going around in gangs, it's not difficult to spot them. The police should be out there in the streets and upholding the law.
And the parents too have a responsibility, know
where they are and who they are with.
The situation is already bad, the longer it is
allowed to go on,the worse it will get.

There was another on the Tyne Bridge last night (Friday) some nutter was waving a knife about and stabbed a Policeman several times,if the officer had not had his protective vest on he would be dead now.
I have always said that anyone with a knife should be given a mandatory sentence of five years as they do for firearms after all, knives do as much damage as any gun.

"Banning guns, knife amnesties none of these work"
Consequences that fit the crime are what is needed, the youth of today love the American knife and gun culture, Yardie gangs love the so called Kudos or respect guns and knives bring to their society ...add a mixture of extremely poor parenting, poor policing (and who can really blame them their arms are tied behind there backs)the PC brigade who spout human rights, poor education, boredom, poverty and unemployment and you have a breeding ground for crime of every sort.It is a very good question and I hope someone will have an answer but I am sorry to say I dont know where it will all end or how to stop it.

well, i dont know how to stop this, but it seems that all these people who say no to smacking your kids, no to the caine at school, no to capital punishment etc. I DO NOT SMACK MY KIDS OR BELIEVE IN CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, so in a way i am contradicting myself here, but i think that there is no deterrant anymore for stopping crimes like this, but yet people still expect parents to make their kids behave, but as soon as the parents do, they are in the wrong and took to court. (I am not talking about abusers here, like parents who just hurt their children just for the sake of it) but i think we should re-think these rules and what it means for the parents who try so hard to control their kids and when they do, they are facing investiagtions for "assault" its silly.
I know someone who this has happened to, and the mother has a very strong willed son and is at her wits end. SHe has asked the school for help, the doctors, the social services, the young persons mental health scheme in their town, she has asked everyone who she believed could help her try and get control of her son. NONE did, they all gave her some lame excuse and nothing was done. Her son went to school with a bruise on his leg and told the teacher his mum did it, and she was investigated as abusing her son. She would never abuse her son. The social services decided she was a good mum and dropped the case, and yet she still struggles to control him. I have offered my advice but it seems that everything she should do, is looked down on and her biggest fear is that he will grow up to be dead or in something she can not help him with, and she is helpless. Everyone is quick to point finger at parents like her, but when it comes down to helping her and trying to sort it out, no one does. I do not like the idea of smacking kids but to be honest i think that is what this person should do with her son. He is only 10 and already rules the home and its getting terrible. She has been to classes and seen everyone she can to get advice, nothing has worked yet.
I think there just needs to be more of a deterrant for kids and offenders and maybe it might work for some. We know it wouldnt do it for all, but at least the parents who are trying to get control of their kids, they might feel supported by the government instead of being blamed and punished for doing it.
Just my opinion
