It is polar. That is part of the reason it mixes with water. It is also soluble with nonpolar substances like hydrocarbons because of the two methyl side groups.

Acetone is another molecular material with both polar and nonpolar characteristics.

Asphaltene fractionated by solubility in a polar (acetone) and a nonpolar (n-heptane) precipitating solvent. This results show that the acetone-precipitated asphaltene fractions have larger structural differences compared with those of n-heptane.

Acetone is CH3(CO)CH3 which contains a carbonyl group (C=O), this is what imparts the polarity onto the acetone molecule. The oxygen bears a slight negative charge and the carbon of the carbonyl group has a slight positive charge (because oxygen is more electronegative than carbon- unfair sharing of electrons) Hexane on the other hand is completely nonpolar because is just contains methyl and methylene groups of just singly bonded C-H. Hope that helps!

acetone is polar due to formation of hydrogen bond like water
acetone is nonpolar due to containing of carbonyl functional group. It solubilises naphthalene due to nonpolar characteristics.Naphthalene is nonpolar in nature.Like dissolve like

Acetone is a non-polar substance. Despite what everyone is saying, this solvent willbe the last to move the mobile position before approaching the stationary phase (that is, if you are doing paper chromatography). I asked the head of science at my school and this is what she said therefore she is right. hope it helped :)
