The doctor cannot see your uterus during a pap smear. They can only see your cervix. To see your uterus, your cervix would have to be dilated. Your doctor can only diagnose PID by doing a pelvic exam, and swabbing the area and having the sample tested. The sooner you see your family doctor, the better. Waiting even 1 or 2 days can allow the infection to spread and cause more pain and damage. The pap smear normally is a screen for pre-cancer indicators while PID is the result of neglected infection such as chlamydia or gonorrhea infections. If you have any reason to believe you have PID, let the doctor know and they'll test you for it. Otherwise, the Pap smear won't show that you have it.

No. A PAP is a scraping of cells from the mouth of the womb, or lower part of the cervix, with a sampling from the cervical canal. A trained gynecologist would never get to your upper cervix.

A pap smear is a cotton swave that they pull cells from the cervex wall. The cervex looks like a bright pink donut with a hole in it! They simply swab the area and do tests from there. A great site for information is hystersisters.com (or org, can't remember). Unfortunately, I do not know too much about PID but believe me, you will find a wealth of information on that website! Good Luck! :) Kat

A Pap smear (also known as the Pap test) is a medical procedure in which a sample of cells from a woman's cervix (the end of the uterus that extends into the vagina) is collected and spread (smeared) on a microscope slide. The cells are examined under a microscope in order to look for pre-malignant (before-cancer) or malignant (cancer) changes. They don't & can't see your uterus while doing this procedure.
A Pap smear is a simple, quick, and relatively painless screening test. Its specificity - which means its ability to avoid classifying a normal smear as abnormal -- while very good, is not perfect. The sensitivity of a Pap smear - which means its ability to detect every single abnormality -- while extremely good, is also not perfect. Thus, a few women develop cervical cancer despite having regular Pap screening.
In the vast majority of cases, a Pap test does identify minor cellular abnormalities before they have had a chance to become malignant and at a point when the condition is most easily treatable. The Pap smear is not intended to detect other forms of cancer such as those of the ovary, vagina, or uterus. Cancer of these organs may be discovered during the course of the gynecologic (pelvic) exam, which usually is done at the same time as the Pap smear.

The doctor can feel the uterus for anything abnormal such as shape and size but the actual pap smear is taken from the cervix. A pap smear is a special kind of test to screen for cancer of the cervix. By having it done on an annual basis if a woman starts to have symptoms that could indicate cervical cancer, or the doctor starts to see changes that could mean cancer then treatment can start very early.
They do the pap smear by using a special brush to take some of the cells from the cervix. It is then put on slides that get sent out to a lab for further examination. The results then come back in about a week or two. There can be some spotting for about 2 days after this exam because of irritation that occurred as a result of the brush used to take the cells.
As for PID, that is picked up by other kinds of cultures and also sometimes x-rays because if severe enough it can cause scar tissue to build up. If the pap smear does pick up PID it's by coincidence just like with an infection of the cervix that other women can get.
The symptoms of PID can be symptoms of other medical conditions such as endometriosis if one is having a lot of pain. If one is having a lot of pain then please let your doctor know so that they can evaluate the situation even further.

A pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. It ONLY screens for cervical (pre)cancer; it does not test for STDs or any other conditions. It does not test for PID and it does not have anything to do with the uterus.

The cervix is the neck of the womb(uterus) which pokes in to your vagina.
When we take a pap smear(cervical smear) we are able to look directly at the cervix to see whether there is any visible abnormality-we then scrape/brush the cells at the junction of the cervix where abnormal cells develop-These are then sent away for examination to see whether they are normal or show any changes that cause concern.
We are not able to see inside your uterus or see your ovaries. It does not detect PID-we can take swabs to check for infection at the same time .but this is not routinely part of the smear.
At the same time we can do a vaginal examination to check that your ovaries and uterus are not enlarged. If you do have PID then your uterus and tubes may feel swollen and enlarged on examination.
I hope I have explained it clearly for you.
Do not be nervous if you think that you may have an infection tell your doctor. They then can do the necessary swabs at the same time
