Short out the positive and the negative sides of a common nine-volt transistor-type battery with some common steel wool fibers. They will begin to glow as the circuit heats up. Use the glowing steel fibers to ignite whatever tinder you have handy. Partially charred cotton cloth will do nicely.

I got a Bic.

If you wanna go on Survivor.. have a mag glass or a strong pair of glasses. Practice first, it takes a bit of skill.

If you want to make fire for any other purpose, go ask fire dept how to do it.
