There is more emphasis placed on women to act "lady-like" than there is on men to act proper. For example, and don't deny it, but when a man shares a dirty joke, burps loudly and goes unshaven throughout the day, people generally dismiss these things. Imagine a woman who hasn't brushed her hair, farts loudly and laughs about it, and wears baggy clothes -- which image stands out the most to you? I'm sure it's the one of the woman.
So what is the purpose of being proper in regards to women? Men seem to be able to act however they like. What effect does it have on a man's testicles when a woman maintains properly groomed cuticles and pretends like her gender disables her farting and burping capabilities? Because I mean, we all know that women don't poop. A magical bowel fairy descends from the clouds, and with a wave from her sparkly, little wand, the poop is all gone! :)

Its just not attractive when women do those things. Sorry... its a double standard but thats just how it is. Just like its more acceptable for a woman to have no direction in life than a man. Women are turned off my a man with no job and no ambition. But a woman in this situation is not judged as harshly. What can you do?

I think it honestly depends on the situation.
In a formal, respectful environment, both ladies AND men are expected to act properly. If ANYONE was burping and farting and sharing dirty jokes with others, it would definately be looked down upon.
But if you're talking in terms of just any-old environment, I guess you could say it's a kind of "expected" of ladies to act this way. I guess normally it's a woman's temperment to act more demure and "proper" in order to attract men to marry, as it was in the old days (and still, sadly, in some instances today.) I honestly think it's a little less expected of women today to act "lady-like" but the only way I can see it is that it's just a formality.

I keep an extra bowel fairy and a sparkly wand in my tiny handbag... I always wanted to be a trophy wife, but so far it hasn't happened. In the meantime (just because I was so bored) I went back to university and got an honours degree. I didn't find a husband there either...Oh well maybe after I get my Master's degree or my PhD then I'll find a man who will notice my groomed cuticles as well as my inability to burp or fart... Some day my prince will come, some day my prince will come...

There's a great deal more to being ladylike that the things you have mentioned!
Not too much makeup (looks like slapped on)
Not too many highlights (looks tarty)
Good skin, good figure, good bustline, slim legs - and all this first thing in the morning without any help!
Not too much jewellery
Not too much bad language
Not dressing in an over-revealing manner
Being articulate, erudite and having common sense
A sense of worth about oneself - i.e. personal grooming and care
I could go on and on and on ..........

I guess it's because it's a women are more gentle and men are sort of more rough so it's just considered part of the way they are.
But I don't think women should have any different treatment to men, to tell you the truth. We should all learn to be a bit more discreet. :) It makes life a lot more pleasant.

a million. women human beings often set a usual and symbolize society as an entire. If a woman acts in an undignified way, she is regarded down upon becuase our society follows its previous custom of ladies human beings behaving suitable, effective and curtious. regardless of ladies human beings being taken care of as 2d-classification electorate, women everybody is regarded upon by ability of their candy charm, dignified attitudes, and baty. A womenhaving undesirable dispositions like a guy is considered as a contadiction to their elegance and that they are often lok upon in disgrace. ex: Paris Hilton. comparable way our society seems at a guy and a woman having a super style of parteners. a guy is a pimp and a woman is a whore/slut. as quickly as agian is taken care of as undignified behaviour. 2. a woman being woman-like is a compliment to her elegance and gender. women everybody is very noticable while it is composed of presentation of themselves so appearing "woman-like" is under pressure extra then a guy being a gents as a manner to help them develope right into a society the place they're regarded at in a diverse way then adult males.

being "lady-like" of women is very insignificant! well, at least on my part. but in terms of "norm" significance, yes it is very significant, :-( we have our social roles. and being lady-like of women is one of them. people are being obfuscated by our prescriptive and proscriptive norms. women must act according to the norms and so as men. but, apparently, women has all the disadvantages. but who cares? if you feel like doing something and it makes you happy, women or men, you have the choice. don't be trapped by our norms. as long as you're happy with what you're doing, and you're not hurting other people, then it's the right thing to do. ^_^

Different standards for the sexes. Women are forgiven for showing fear, or crying, or even being cheap. It is almost taboo for men to do those things.
