Mold will grow on almost anything but not without a source for food and they usually like a damp environment. Did you actually wear the suits and perhaps something (like food) was spilled on them? There is a possiblity that they were already contaminated when you purchased them. If not, then is there a chance that somehow water or ? leaked into your closet from outside (like from a leaking roof or plumbing on a level above you?

Is your closet too air-tight? To avoid this problem (you have probably noticed) some closet doors are louvered. Do you hang clothes up in it that are not completely dry (either from the dryer or coming in from the rain? The higher the quality of the suits, the more chance that they are natural fibers (wool, silk, cotton, mohair) and natural organic type fabrics are more susceptible to mold or mildew if conditions are right.

Take them to the cleaners sooner... not later! If they have mold or mildew growing on them it needs to be removed right away. Permanent damage to the fibers will happen otherwise A good cleaner will be able to tell you if they can salvage them or not before going to expense of cleaning if they are wrecked. Good luck.

Lastly, if you have home contents insurance - it might cover the suits if the damage is caused by water leaking. Some policies do. If you are renting an apartment or are in a condo-complex there could be coverage from them. The original value of the suits will dictate whether or not it is worth it to follow through on trying to have them replaced. Another factor, some contents insurance give replacement value - not a pro-rated by age amount. Costs extra but if, for example, you have a 28" TV that is 15 years old... you get a brand new one - not just a few dollars for it.

I would get rid of them. Not sure if the cleaners could get them out or not, but I've tried washing things that have had mold on them and it leaves a stain where the mold was. I just ended up throwing it away.

The cleaners can't help you and even if one does they will tell you they will try but no guarantee. The suits are ready for the garbage. Sorry.

From dampness in the wall, sometimes when we have a lot of rain, we don't realize that the walls retain that and cause dampness in the house. A dehumidifier will help release the dampness.

Take them to the cleaners and point out the problem. If they can't get it out, throw them away. Lesson well learned.
