NaOH is manufactured by the electrolysis of sea-water, or brine (sodium chloride solution). You can look it up.

Sodium's symbol is Na not NA as Cobalt's is Co not CO (carbon monoxide).
You can make NaOH by putting a SMALL piece of sodium in water.The sodium reacts producing sodium hydroxide and hydrogen. If you put some universal indicator into the water first you will see the colour change from green to purple.
2Na(s) + 2H2O(l) >>>2Na OH(aq) + H2(g).
This experiment is done in schools under health and safety rules. You can't just go out and buy sodium in a hardware store.
Sodium hydroxide is deliquescent and readily absorbs CO2 from the air so should be kept in airtight containers.
2NaOH + CO2 >>>>Na2CO3 + H2O.
You can buy sodium hydroxide pellets though, as drain cleaner. You need to be very careful as it can cause as much damage to your skin as a strong acid.

I think that industrially Lye is pruduced electrolytically by running a direct current through Salt water and venting off the chlorine that is produce.b

I think that u can buy them directly...
You don't have to make them.

The easier way to make NaOH is by soaking Na into water, but this is very dangerous because it'll explode and set on fire.

2Na(s) + 2H2O(l) --> 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g)

DO NOT TRY IT AT HOME!
