I keep my documents in the plastice expanding files and then when i have to leave I put them in a rubbermaid container... pack my kids new school clothes seperate from their summer clothes.. put my pics and negatives in container and take them... get my pups their things.. make them a pallet in the 3rd seat.. each of my kids get to pack a back pack with their special things and favorite toys.... the toys left behind ( I use rubbermaid containers w/ lids as their toy boxes ) so we just put the lids on them and put them up off the floor... also keep all the kids dvd's in a car dvd holder and grab their small t.v. w/ dvd player and take that with us so that they can watch their movies in the hotel.... my decorative pics in the house I put in large water tight bags and store them in a interior closet off the floor... clean my fridge and freezer out .... secure all outside things and do as much as possible to our home.... and leave a day before they call for evac( cannot do the traffic thing) have family where we evac to so we use this as a reason to go visit( plus my kids 13, 5 & 3 love to stay in hotels ... so if it misses and we can return they tell everbody we went on vacation for a couple of days) Husband usually has to stay so we travel in a group w/ parents and in laws...
Best wishes

Plan ahead, waaay ahead. The primary concern, of course, is the safety of you, your family, pets (if any) and important items. To be safe, you may have to get out of harm's way. Plan where you are going AND how you are going to get there. Don't wait until too late and leave when everyone else does by the same route everyone else does. I can think of quite a few friends and family members who have done great preparations such as securing items, documents, boarding up, etc, but when they went to get on the highway the day before the storm was predicted to arrive, it took them 4 hours to drive 90 miles. The term "expressway" didn't apply, so much as "parking lot" or even "middle of road rest area" did.

I'm boarding up on Monday and Tuesday and leaving Tuesday night. It looks like it will be bad and I should have some idea where it is coming in by then and if it doesn't come, I'll just leave the boards up till the end of September. I'm taking my critters, clothes, papers, food, water, cash, camera and I will be back when I can
