Here is an excerpt from a poem. I like the poem. I can't find the complete text. My mother wrote it, but she is now very sick and I may never find the original, although I believe it was published:

"The heart has hunger of its own,
That cannot be assuaged,
By rote, or rule, or numbered page."

If you do feel you can interpret it, let me know what you think of it as well. Please remember my mother wrote it, and it would be really lame if you were to leave a stupid or sarcastic remark (as a very small percentage of yahoo answer people do).

Well stated! The heart has a hunger that can not be lessened by repetition, and there are no rules or written words to govern the heart's hunger!

The heart has a hunger (desire, yearning) of it's own (not conforming to man's convention, desire for money or power they say should make you happy)
That cannot be assuaged (satisfied with the things of this world, money, prestige, or the way someone looks )
By rote, or rule (things humankind tell us in commericals that should make us happy), or numbered page (written by supposed experts in books and magazines).

Its a message of self-discovery I think

A person's heart or even soul cannot be dictated by any religion or written ethic by any other person because it is yours and you own it. Only you can truly understand it. I mean despite the written knowledge of matters of the heart only a person discovering for themselves can understand the capacity for the heart to satisfy and heal itself.

So many wander and wonder, where there is beauty in its most basic, natural surroundings, aware of it but, still dragged to their deepest places. Seeing that beauty, and the recognition of it, as a huge irony. Toying and cajoling them, over the briefness of their stay here. Yes the poppies grew well on the blood stained soils, but the rose and the vine, respond in much the same way.

I think it means something along the lines that we are never satisfied. Once we get what we want, we want something more. I might be totally off, I'm not very good at poetry. Whatever it is, it sounds beautiful.

Sounds like...
A heart is not-controlled...
Never satisfied...
From memory, rules or discipline...

Hope that helps. Take care.

"The heart needs food different from that of the mind or stomach
It cannot be quenched
by (music/repetition), dicipline, or books."

love cannot be controlled or quenched by culture, such as music, art, or literature, dicipline, control, or will-power
Love must be fed by other life.

I feel it means that you can't keep the human spirit down with human logic.
