Anything running on your car uses energy, which ultimately comes from the gasoline in the engine. Use the fan, use a little more gas than when not using the fan. Same for the A/C and headlights. Same for raising or lowering your electric windows. Where do you think the energy to do these things comes from, out of thin air? The larger the load, the more energy used, the less mileage. It is a matter of the magnitude of the load whether you will actually notice a difference from one fillup until the next.

Ok let's get this straight, to all of those who answered this question before I did, that said yes. You haven't got a clue!!
Anything in the car that is powered by electricity is not going to use more fuel. All electricity (when the car is running) comes from the alternator and using your fan or your stereo or anything else is not going to cause the gas powered engine to run faster or work harder, so turn on your fan, the head lights, your cell phone charger, crank the stereo and rock out to your heats content.

It all depends on what you mean "waste." If you have a type of car that has a hepa type air system and makes the air you breathe a little better when you drive, then it is not a waste. The gas usage by having the fan on is negligible.

You will not have any loss in fuel mileage using your fan. Even using the air conditioner will likely have little effect on your overall gas mileage.

In my small car, I usually turn the air conditioner off when heading up mountains/hills on the freeway, to give all the available power to climb up them. When heading down the other side again, and on the open/flatter roads, I'll keep the air conditioner on when needed.

My overalll decreased fuel economy loss is barely measureable, but even if I lose a few mpg, it's worth the couple extra dollars to travel comfortably in the heat!

If you want to talk theory, then yes it does. Will you ever notice it, not likely. Anything that uses energy wastes gas. Unless the energy is used to turn the drive wheels. Just the same as using the radio will waste gas. It just doesn't use that much energy to worry about it. So turn the fan on and enjoy. Good luck.

Anything that you run in your car will use a certain amount of energy. It's only a waste if you get no use out of it.
