We got this in an exam and im confused

Silicon has the highest melting point. in Period 3. This is due to its covalent bonding and giant covalent structure. On melting, therefore, all the covalent bonds have to be weakened, and this requires a large amount of energy. You can predict this because it is the only element with this structure in Period 3, and exactly the same happens with carbon in Period 2.
