I'm planning on getting a old school box chevy

It depends on what you call old school. Some of them got decent mpg (14-20), but some of them didn't (3-9).
A lot of it depends on how they were geared and how you drive them.

my 1973 mustang gets about 17 mpg depending if it needed a tuneup. it has a 302cid, 2 barrel, automatic

15 on a good day if you aren't mashing the gas pedal to the floor.

v8 engines would generally be less than 20mpg-how much less depends...
6 cylinder around 20 or so-it depends, too
