Doc Martens are very sturdy & comfortable.

I associate this brand w/ rebels, free thinkers, creative types. Doc Martens used to be associated w/ Punk rock & dis-satisfied, lower class, British youths.

However, I recently bought a pair of Mary Janes & I'm none of these things. (Well, maybe I am a bit creative.) Here's a photo: http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/16001467/c/3.html

Besides brand image - the style you will project depends on what else you wear w/ them, your hair cut, your personality, etc.

No. Doc Martens were originally meant to be affordable footwear for British factory workers. They gained popularity as a fashion item in the late '70s with the punk movement and have stayed, pretty much unchanged, in fashion in one way or another ever since. Sure, if you get calf height bright red ones, you're making a definitive statement, but most more ordinary looking ones are just fine for pretty much anybody.

I wear my DMs all the time, Im a teenage girl and I think they looks awesome. They go very well with skinny jeans and if Im feeling particularly rebellious with a skirt or dress. Also they keep me warm and dry all through winter while all my friends are getting soaked in their 'fashionable' shoes like converse, and they last absolutely ages so a good investment too.

I wore a pair of my moms Doc Martens from back in the late 80's, early 90's and they were ok. They weren't the that comfortable, but they're not really fashionable either. They wouldn't give you any type of rep either, just maybe bad fashion =/

Old-school punks. Sport them with a 'hawk and red suspenders. No stereotypes there... ;)'
