I do not want a holdout gun. I am not completely unfamiliar with firearms since I have used them many times, but I am by no means an expert. I want something easily concealable and something that's not too powerful for me.

Thank you for your help.

There are numerous possibilities. I could go into a lot of detail but will try to keep it simple. A general rule of thumb it to carrry the largest caliber of pistol you can shoot well with. I would rather see you with a .38 you can shoot well with, than toting a .357 that you can't hit the broad side of a barn with.

That being said, I feel that the absolute minimum is a .380. I would go bigger if at all possible. Much has been debated between the virtues of the revolver vs the semi-automatic pistol. I won't go into here but will simply say that I feel the virtues of the revolver are outweighted these days by the advantages of a good quality auto loader.

In truth, it is not the gun, but the person holding it. What ever you buy, get training, and practice regularly. I'm not just talking about safe gun handling and target shooting. That is far different than engaging in a shootout. Learn the do's and don'ts. But always remember that what ever you shoot, you own.

I have to disagree with those who suggest pepper spray or a stun gun. Pepper spray is a long way from being all that effective. In windy conditions it can end up in your own face. A stun gun or tazer has only one shot and can be defeated by a heavy coat or leather jacket. Police normally have a backup with them and of course they HAVE a gun as well. While better than nothing, putting your faith in either of those devices is not the wisest of choices. However in some states and for some people they may be the only choice.

I would look to a smaller 9MM . Something striker fired and simple in operation. Glocks and Springfield XD are both good choices. They are extremely reliable, have decent stopping power, are reasonably light in weight and the trigger mechanism gives a consistant shot to shot trigger pull.

What ever you do, put in your time at the range and get the best instruction you can. Owning a gun for defensive purposes is an awesome responsibilty and should never be taken lightly.

I can go into more detail in choices if you like. You can e-mail me if you so desire.

Good luck.

Guns are pretty reliable, and people shoot neighbors not guns. I think like the other guy, I would get something large and threatening. Remember if you aim a gun at someone you must be willing to fire. Otherwise do not do it. I suggest you go to a gun shop and talk to a worker. Then sign up for gun safety classes.I would really reinforce that apartment and possibly move.Maybe if allowed get a small dog. Any barking dog is a deterrent. Plus you will have a built in mini alarm. I have chihuahuas and those dogs can hear a squirrel fart down the block.

You are better off with pepper spray or the like.
But if you want a gun and have the money, buy german. Avoid American guns. I would recommend HK of course, the USP if you need something smaller the p2000.

You'll never kill anyone with a gun if you don't have one...

Also, guns are only useful in long range offense for the swift of mind and body.

I would reccomend a rocket launcher, flamethrower or small surface-to-air missile. All can be easily concealed underneath a burqua (or two).

No nuclear warhead; that goes without saying, of course!

i had a 22 caliber handgun.. but you should also be aware of the laws of your state.. i had to be certified to shoot and have a concealment permit.. and the firearm permit. if you get a gun and dont have the paperwork .. you can end up in jail

Check out the stun guns. They are not lethal, but will render a person totally useless. Guns with bullets are a disaster waiting to happen....truly!!!!!
