I woke up at 1:00 in the morning and my husban said that he saw a skink go into our celler what do you think is the best why to get rid of it...???

open the door it probley came in through- it probley doesn't want to be there, throw some food outside the door to make it want to go back outside, and give it a little while. it should wander back out. no sudden movements.

Call animal control and tread lightly. In the meantime, make no loud noises and stockpile lots of tomatoes and tomato juice in case someone gets sprayed! Wish we had known about tomatoes when my sister was sprayed; the only thing worse than skunk smell is skunk smell mixed with the stuff we use to get rid of the smell!
Perhaps the skunk has been going in the cellar all along and is raising a family? Sadly, we don't have skunks around here anymore; the possums took over. (They compete for habitat and the possums win.)

Wait for it to go out. Make sure the cellar is closed tight.
The mothball idea sounds really good.
I got rid of a skunk by spraying it with a hose. LOTS of water. It didn't hang around, had no chance to spray.
But, DO call Animal Control.

Funny you should ask. This happened to my sister and her husband about 30 years ago. My brilliant bro-in-law tried to scare it out of the floor joists with a broom handle. To this day some items that were in that house still smell of skunk and mothballs.
It will get hungry and come out sooner or later. When it does plug the hole where it got in.

Grab it by the tail and RUN!! No really, call your local animal control, and they will bring out a live trap and set it for you. Just get ready for some funk, a skunk will usually spray when it gets trapped. Good luck!! Just don't do what my gun crazy uncle did when I was a kid. My grandparents had one in their crawl space, so he shot it with a .357. It took us 4 months to get the smell out of their house.

Open as many doors and windows as possible. Close doors to as many rooms as you can that you know it is not in there. Set some food just outside the door, something smelly like tuna. Do your best not to scare it

don't scare it, that would be a bad idea
then call animal control or open a door in your basement and hope it wanders out

i think the best way to get it out is to use mothballs and get a exterminator. Because my cousin had one in her house and that's how she got it out
