Ok, this has been bottled up with me for a while. Everytime a school shooting happens and the murderers are caught and questioned, they always reply.... They picked on me day after day, after day. THAT IS NOT AN EXCUSE!!! In no way should anyone look at that situation and say "It's because of the people who picked on these kids that made them do it!". IN THE END, NO MATTER WHAT YOU MAY THINK, THE KIDS THAT DECIDE TO GO THROUGH WITH IT.... PULL THE TRIGGER THEMSELVES. NO ONE MADE THEM DO IT! THEY HAD A CHOICE! Kids are allowed to beleive that their lives revolve around their school life with no light at the end of the tunnel (other than maybe one day you can be what you want to be). School is only about 10% of your entire life. Parents need to start encouraging their kids to look past the crap that goes on inside of school.

None of what I am talking about has happened recently, I am refering to previous events. And other than a handful of people that were caught and question over a long period of time....I am refering to notes that these murderers leave if they know they are gonna commit suicide. And I have never read the Bible. I know a few things from it and I believe in GOD. But nothing I am talking about is stemming from the Bible itself, but rather, my own outstanding logic.

Thank you!
Amen!
I appreciate this!
I also appreciate your not blaming the teachers.
You would think that we are in control of their whole lives.

Both the Asker and The Answerers here have made good points. However, I think that there is a reason to HEAR those who bring up the former mistreatment of those who take as much abuse as they can take, and then self destruct, taking a lot of innocent lives with them.

Yes, ultimately THE ACTOR is the one who is responsible. That doesn't change the fact that there has always been the well known "pecking order" in schools. It is great for those near the top, or even for those who are near the bottom, but are still able to find a group of friends in which to belong. However, for those few who wind up "low man on the totem pole" that position can be unbearable. The level of harassment in some schools is out of control. If you have never been in the shoes of that one kid who is always on the outside looking in, always the outcast, you can count yourself blessed. That kid is carring a burden of fear, loneliness, and emptiness. He carries it every day, and he carries it alone.

I just think we all need to teach our children to be kinder, more compassionate, more inclusive, rather than exclusive toward their classmates. I realize that teachers have a huge job and don't really need another job at school, but I do think that they can be an influence in the classroom toward making it a more welcoming environment. If these children felt more accepted, they would be better students as well. Perhaps it would be a win, win situation for everyone.

Thanks for listening.

How many school shootings have you heard about recently in which the perpetrators were caught and questioned?

Anyway, why should anybody expect someone mentally ill enough to kill innocent people to be able to provide any sort of decent answer as to why s/he carried out the act?

Of course there is no justification for those acts. The point isn't to get a simple explanation to why the victims deserved to die. The point is to try to find out what factors were in place before the killer became so sick.

Go have some chats with an actively paranoid schizophrenic, and then come back and tell me what you think about simple choices. After all, there is good evidence to suggest that several of the mass killers in recent history were actively clinically psychotic.

This is the same point that irritates me when I hear defense lawyers saying in defense of murder suspects who plead guilty: "he was a victim of child abuse while growing up." The guy might be 50 now. Child abuse deep in the past is not an excuse for murdering innocent people. The responsibility is that of the actor, no matter what his or her reasons for acting may have been. One can always choose NOT to act. Basically I agree with you, and I think this problem is pervasive in society, from school life to home and workplace life.

EDIT: Lady M and Thrice have both brought up good points about bullying, the failings of society and their role in destabilizing a child. I, too, was bullied for being stubbornly weird for many years in school. My parents were basically absent and I had to face the consequences on my own, except when they warranted trips to faceless psychologists (rather than parental understanding). The modern society is more about keeping people just sane enough to continue being cogs of society than about facilitating real well-being. This is true not only in schools but in workplaces and at home. Authorities are reactive to extreme situations, but only when it is too late. Everything is about control and making sure the larger machine runs smoothly, even if it means part of the population is walked over. School shootings are part of the issue, but what about the widening workplace shootings? What about rampant domestic violence? People do not care about preventing, only controlling. It is too hard to face the issues when someone hasn't been killed over them. To those who can't take it anymore, killing becomes a viable way to bring attention to their problems. Certainly this is a failing of society, but not everyone chooses this method. To those who do, they must take responsibility for it.

I don't downplay society's role; it is pervasive, and no amount of gun control or video game censoring will change it. The are surface symptoms. We already have censorship and gun control. If authorities will not enforce existing laws, what good is it to have more laws? If ONE teacher or student at Virginia Tech had had a gun in that classroom building, Cho Seung Hui could have been stopped. Sure, guns are dangerous and can be used against the wielder, but to a properly trained wielder, they give more of a fighting chance against someone who is armed. No amount of gun control is going to stop someone who is determine to get a gun. Sorry, getting off soapbox now!
