The population grows because more people are being born than are dieing, India's fertility rate is 2.8 births per woman which is only a little over replacement level of 2.1 and much lower than the historical value. However because of the high fertility rates in the past they have a relatively young population with a large number of women of childbearing age and an increasing life expectancy so the death rate is much lower than the birth rate. The high population growth rate ( which is equal to births -deaths) will continue for several decades after the fertility rate falls to replacement level 2.1 which is expected to happen by 2020. The UN expects India's population to stabilize by 2050 if present trends continue.

The previous posters seem unaware that international and government efforts have been underway since the 1960's to reduce the birth rate and although it took time they have been successful. The most successful strategy for reducing fertility is to decrease the infant mortality rates and improve opportunities for women. Neither of these can be accomplished overnight.

Reasons For Population Growth

No. Increased population is the cause of rapid urban growth (assuming the new population stays in town or moves there from the country). "Urban growth" under your definition just means the city takes up more land space, [ and then I guess you assume because there is more land with houses on it, the people will have more children to fill up those houses, i e = increased population.]

India is the land of Kamasutra and the Indian men are literally practising the art of love making as great lovers. For those illiterates living in below poverty conditions in rural India, love- making is the only source of entertainment and it is the women folk who bear the brunt whether they enjoy wholesome sex or not. They think that babies are gifts from god and it is their duty to obey their husbands. But in cities, the educated society ladies are indulging in sex for the heck of it.
