Someone doesn't know what they are talking about. The engine in the XR4TI is right out of the Thunderbird Turbocoupe and Mustang SVO. You should read up on those before you decide.

Here is a list is for people that appreciate the Mustang SVO. The car with the small engine and big heart. Actual this engine (the 2.3 Turbo EFI) was first used in the Thunderbird in 1983 and then the Mustang, Cougar XR7 and Merkur XR4TI. It has gained popularity because it can make a lot of horsepower.
This list is to be used to correspond with others of the same interest, with facts, events and questions about the above mentioned cars. There are also lots of great links in the Bookmarks!

yes! they are great cars. if you can find a good manual one, it will be a fun car to drive. the guy that said 'they quit making them cause of problems' is an idiot...they quit making them mainly due to bad advertising, and the up coming(at the time) of mandated abs, sir, etc...the tooling would cost to much, so it was abandond,,but it is really a ford sierra....uk?? ring a bell? they were/are very popular. they are great little cars. look at the v8 powered rs of the day! a monster!!

Don't listen to two of these shmucks. They really don't know a thing about a Merkur. Just because your dad worked at Ford doesn't mean he knows a thing about them. I've spoke to Ford engineers, as far as I could tell they were clueless. Plus, no American Ford engineer or line worker even touched any Merk. They were assembled in Germany.

I drive an XR4Ti, every day, with out worry. Of course, as with ANY old car, things will fail. I have two drivers, one with over 200K!!! Look over the one you're interested in carefully. You don't want to just jump on anything unless you're willing to accept that it may be a project. But if you know how to work with them, they are very rewarding.

When tuned properly, they can haul serious rear end. I don't have many problems holding pace with even newer 4.6 GTs, even blowing out the lame auto sloshboxes. And I just run a stock motor and trans with just a few external mods (would be more, but I'm poor). Timing and boost control, my friend. And make sure its breathing right. SVOMAN you rock I love the 2.3t fox bodies.

Good luck. Ponder your purchase carefully.

certainly...sure. Imported from Germany they have been speedy, quiet and dealt with nicely. yet -- now that they are an orphan vehicle the alternative areas are much extra overpriced that earlier, knowledgeable techs are complicated to discover and, face it, it incredibly is a twenty twelve months previous vehicle and issues are going to be worn or wearing out speedy. till you only like the unusual and stale-beat sort of vehicle it ought to become a money pit.

They're good for going fast, but once their engine blows (eventually they all do) they are almost impossible to repair. Something about not having cylinder sleeves or sumthin.

Lots of mechanical problems with these cars. They didn't import them for very long for a reason. Problems. Lots of problems. Parts are VERY expensive. Sorry.
