I had to work today so my boyfriend had to take our 4 month old to her doctors appt and with him everything gets lost in translation.

He said the doctor said that we should start feeding her fruit, a different kind every other day.

So my question is, What kind of fruit is he talking about??? Like the little jars of gerber fruit??

I know its a DUH question but I have to make sure!!

yes the jars, stage 1 if she hasn't started them, but start with veggies first, go thru all the stage 1 veggies, then go to the fruit
introduce a new flavor about every 3-4 days, start with squash, sweet potatoes, and carrots, then go to green beans and peas, then the fruit

Yes, the doctor meant the jars (as everyone as has said) but I would just mention that I was told both by my doctor (a mother of four) and everything I've read to start with vegetables first. Fruit is sweet and if you start your baby on fruit, you may have trouble getting the baby to take vegetables. Even the baby food companies recommend this.

your baby doesn't start immediatly on fruit and definitly not at 4 months. You need to transition her with cereals first. Usually around 4 months you start with rice cereal for a couple weeks if she has an allergic reaction take her off and talk to the doctor, usually they will say wait a few days to see if symptoms go away then you start with oat cereal, then barley cereal. When she is 6 months that is when you start her on the fruits and veggies. You can start her in any order but usually you start with yellow veggies (squash, sweet potatos, carrots) then give her fruits usually starting with pears, bananas, apples. Then you give her green vegetables. You always give at least four days on the same food so you can look for signs of allergic reactions. Once a food has been introduced you can give it to her as often as you'd like. Wait to give her corn though, because even though that is a yellow vegetable their are nutrients that babies shouldn't have until they are 9-12 months of age. This information is what my pediatrician told me earlier this week when I took my daughter in for her 6 mos appointment. She just now is starting on veggies! Also if you aren't sure what to do, why not wait on giving your child the fruit and start with the cereal over the weekend and call your pediatrician on Monday and ask them to clarify. That way you know firsthand what is said. Best of luck.

Our Dr has us start at 4mos. Rice ceral to learn concept of accepting, feeding, swallowing.
From there some Dr say fruit some veggie. (jars 1st stages only for texture thickness=4mos)
Idea is fruit is sweeter if introduced 1st baby eat/but also introduced 1st sweet then not want to eat veggie.

I find veggie 1st works best.If they hate the greens carrots and sweet potato always a hit. Then fruits. As others said only 1 new intro food/day a week for allergy reaction/monitoring. Remeber they get fussy turn away, continually spit out end session they do not have to eat full jar. !st year of life main source is formula or breastmilk

1st foods: order
Rice ceral

Dr preference usual dictates fruit or veg 1st:

Veggies:
Peas
Carrots
Green beans
Sweet potato
Squash

Fruit:
Apple
Banana
Pear
Peaches
Grab a spoon!!!!

I know how you feel, my husband can't remember a darn thing.

It doesn't have to be the jars, just mash up a banana or a peach. If you're having, say, sweet potatoes with dinner, just mash up extra for baby. It's easier and healthier since actual fruits and veggies don't have the extra stuff that the stuff in the jars have.

Just so you know, the newest guidelines from pediatricians are that babies shouldn't have solids until 6 months.

So I don't know if your doctor said that you SHOULD start, or that you COULD start. Another one of those lost in translation things, haha.

I am surprised that your Dr said to start out with fruits, mine said to start with veggies cuzz once they try fruits and like the sweetness it is hard to get them to go to veggies.

Anyway, Yes he is talking about the #1 foods. Gerber etc. What you do is start with....... say....Peaches you give the baby peaches for one meal a day for 3 days (maybe your dr said for 2 days) you see that there is no allergic reaction and then go to next one....pears. then you feed the baby peaches and pears for 2 different meals a day until 3 days are done then go to the next fruit.
What I did is I started out with rice cereal before the baby food so I fed my baby cereal for the other meals plus the milk.
The main reason you do this is so you know that they are not allergic to a food. If they are and you had 3 brand new foods introduced the same day then you will not know which one it is.
Hope this helps you.

Sounds kinda early for jarred baby food! Have you started her on rice cereal yet cause that's what you should start with. And I would do veggies before fruit when you do try them but definitely don't alternate everyday...give the same one for atleast a week so you can check for allergic reactions. You weren't kidding that everything get's lost in translation...lol!

My pediatrician is a fruit loop so always second guess your doctor. Mine knew nothing about breastfeeding, feeding, and general daily baby stuff. Unless your baby is a larger baby or is showing signs that she more hungry than usual or waking up at night for extra feeding...wait until 6months. Don't put cereal in her bottle. Don't start with fruit. Start with rice cereal mixed with formula or water or breastmilk until it is very very runny. I fed my daughter rice cereal for a week and then picked oatmeal for the next week. Next I went to banana because you can hand mash it without cooking it.

It's not a duh question, you are a young mom thats all. I broke all the so called rules with my children. I nursed them and around 8 months with my first and 4-5 months with my second I mashed a banana very well until it was almost soupy and had no lumps and that became their first baby food. I later used table scraps and pureed them in a blender with some water and froze them in ice cube trays, I used hot water to thaw them and heat the food when it was feeding time. I never used jar food, ever! It was cheap, easy, and the style of food they would be eating for their whole childhood. Yup they are very healthy!

Yes, duh... lol. Call your dr. if you ever have any questions. That's what they are there for. I can say though, I would start w/ the veggies first. The fruit has sugars in them and then sometimes the baby will not go fo r the veggies. Agin, call the doc. Don't be afraid, we are all new mothers the first time around.
