i usually pull out a solicitation letter,of which i am not without, and ask him to donate. that should scare them away.

You can always say NO and tell the salesman you're not the person he's looking for.

I usually pretend that the salesman's not even there. If he's persuasive, I pretend that I don't speak English or Tagalog, as in I say "Sorry, I don't understand you" in another language, and that usually scares them away. :D

Where I am right now, it's not a problem. There's no salesmen going around in Riyadh, not to my knowledge. Even if there were, no one in the staff accommodation has money.
