If not for the litany of law suits that dragged companies kicking and screaming into not endangering their workforce, we would still be working those conditions.

Good managers will care about their employees well being, but it only goes so far.

The relationship between employers and employees is...you know...business, eh?

Employees provide a service (work). Employers pay a fair wage, based on the market.

but...are you a communist...do you believe the government should set wages? You mentioned that in a previous question.

We have an at will employment system. Noone has to work for anyone.

Why do libs like to bash corporations on here while typing on their corporate made computers and posting on a corporate (yahoo) message board?

Law suits provide a very good incentive to keep companies in check so they dont create unsafe working conditions. But lawsuits can be taken too far and there is a difference in opinion as to how much an employer has to care for their employees. Noone wants a company that would create conditions that would kill anyone. That is much different then forcing your employer to provide you with healthcare and family leave paid vacations. Corporations naturally care about what they should only really be focusing on, profit. Having working conditions that bring in the best workers gives them a more competitive edge. Not being sued every 5 minutes also gives them more money and a competitive edge so a company that truly cared about what it should care about, profits, would be ensuring its workers a safe working condition. There is NOTHING wrong with a company that wants to make money. That is why they exist.

BIG BUSINESS cares about one thing the bottom line.
PERIOD........Yeah, all you hear is "Let's Work Togather"
"Teamwork is Where its at" I've heard it all. I've lived it.....
I was a Union Rep. & Shop Steward, they sent me to check-out new equiptment at the MFG. Co.'s return and train other employees to Operate after helping with Installation. As they said, A vital part of the Department Operations. Pictures, write-ups the whole shabang......
Then I got hurt, I was making very good money coming up on 5 weeks vacation per +12 to14 days holiday pay.
If it hadn't been for the Govt. finally stepping in I would be sleeping in a tent somewhere. That is if I hadn't blown my brains-out!! Oh yeah they care!! Get hurt.........

I work for a very, very large company. Their stockholders' happiness is their bottom line. So, "profitability" is what they are all, ALL about! I have no problem with the fact that they want to make money; it is why businesses exist. But, when that profitability is their ONLY concern, and their employees are considered just easily replaceable cogs in the wheel, it makes me angry--and it doesn't lead to loyalty from those employees!

Many of the older people have recently been offered "buy-outs"; the company wants to replace them with low-paid, part-time employees who will not receive benefits. There are hundreds of people lined up for these "mini-jobs", because the economy is horrible--especially here in the Metro-Detroit area. (So, all of you "get a job and buy your own insurance" people, it's not that easy!!!) Our hours have been cut, and, even tho' I am considered a 30-hr. per week (ie. "full-time") employee, I usually am only scheduled for 22-28 these days. At $9.00 per hour, you can see that it is not easy for me to maintain any sort of "comfortable" life style; in fact, I just "maintain". At the age of 60, and with a physical problem related to pins in my ankle, with the responsibility/joy of caring for my grandchild (so that his mother can work and not have to receive "aid"), and transportation difficulties, it would be more than difficult to "find another job", as so many writers have suggested.

Recently, I tore my rotator cuff, and snapped one of the two tendons that secure the bicep to the shoulder area. When the bicep "went", I had a bruise from my elbow to my shoulder, solid black all the way around my arm. I still worked! (I tore it lifting heavy boxes--part of my job!) I saw the doctor that the company provided for Workman's Comp., had an MRI, and saw a specialist about having surgery to reconnect my bicep and repair the shoulder damage.

Well, guess what? "They" decided that, since I can still move my arm---even "better than I should be able to with the injury I had", according to the specialist--that I could "return to work with no restrictions".

Also, I remember a day when companies like mine had picnics, parties, retirement benefits, made one feel "secure" and "part of the family"---and the employees returned thisd "love" with loyalty and hard work.

What has happened? "Profitability".

It might have something to do with the fact that corporations are not entities, but works of fiction created for tax and liability purposes. Corporations are made up of and run by employees.

Your question is a non sequitur.

I've never thought corporations care. A person is doing good to find any employer that cares. It's been that way for a long time and I got used to it. I quit when I saw they might do me harm.

Working is the same as religion, freedom of choice to work or worship where we please. It would be different if a person was chained to the job sight and made to work under conditions against their will. Most everyone is aware of the dangers at their job. I read your profile, and it read you were in the military. You knew the dangers of the job, yet did it. My job has dangers everyday, and I still go to my job anyway. It is funny how you choose something like starving and having a roof over your head and providing for your loved ones over something like that.

By the way, I have noticed that anyone who disagrees with you, you report them as you have me before. Such as it is. I know the danger and answer your question anyway.

because if you believe that... then they can cut all safety procedures and make more money...

conservatives love to talk about responsibility... they just don't like taking any when it may cost them $1...

they love to rationalized criminal action by saying things like "we have an at will system" (so companies can kill people and if you don't like it... get another job somewhere else)

that's your moral majority... moral as long as it's free...

is there a republican that has one clue about the industrial revolution?

"most workers are aware of the dangers"... yeah... that's because of liberal laws that MAKE THEM DISCLOSE THE DANGERS... seriously people... you have no clue what the history of business is do you?

ALMOST every "good thing" companies do that Republicans have listed on here is because they were forced to by government rules or unions? why didn't they do it on their own before that?

Do republicans have a job? clearly not in manual labor/factory positions?

It's in the best interest of corporations that their employees are well, honey. They loose money and productivity if they aren't. Do you have a job?
