my question is...when using water colors or oil pastels or regular pastels, do you first sketch what you are trying to make and "draw" it and then color it in with water colors or pastels? or do you just use the watercolors or pastels??? any other tips are great! thanks!

It depends on what you are trying to achieve.

I work in watercolor and I have a very realistic style. I begin with a pencil drawing, but it's just a bare-bones sort of thing to lay out the composition. The pencil lines are covered up very quickly by paint. So I'm not "coloring in" a drawing, I'm building up a painting.

Someone else might want their lines to be as prominent as their colors. They will most likely spend a lot more time on the linear aspect than on color.

Whatever you're doing, laying out a good composition first is important.

With pastels, oil pastels, charcoal, conte crayon and color pencil, I lightly sketch out a general outline with the same medium and then go back and build up the shading and highlights, and then go back and color.

I don't do much "wet" work, except color marker. For these, I use a very light pencil sketch for general layout and shapes. Then build color from light to dark.

For watercolor, a light sketch is fine and you can go a little darker for pastels. Or, you can just forget the sketch and just go for it.

ya you are definately gonna wanna sketch it out especially if you want somewhat of a detailed or easy to see peice, the only time that you wouldn't want to sketch is when you want that kinda of messy uncoordinated type of free look to your painting. as far as tips go i would suggest dont worry about how watery the colors get...just play around with the water and see what tyoe of colors you can derive by making it lighter and also blending (not that watercolors are the best for blending) but good luck
either way you do it you cant go wrong
have fun

I haven't used watercolors or paints since college, but I sketch out my picture first.

I sketch my picture first, then paint, or use pastels or colored pencils.
