Hi,
The previous owners had a thin metal L-shaped key to open the bedroom doors. I just can't get it to work. Help, please! They're kwikset locks that you pinch and turn a quarter turn on the one side, and have a small hole on the other side.
FYI- there is no "flat part" to the key. I just can't seem to find the right place to put that long end of the key. Help! I've played around for a full hour now and have no luck finding the exact notch thing (and by the way, how does a round end of a piece of metal (that is like a coat hanger) fit into a "notch", which I assume is rectangular?

Thanks so much for anything!!

Dreepsy, if the tool has no flat, then it won't work. I use an 1/8th inch flat head screw driver. You can pick it up anywhere. Insert it in the hole, make sure you go in straight, and feel for it to drop into a slot. Then turn counter clockwise. This should unlock the knob.

If you have a round hole and a round key, then the intension is that you push on a surface inside - you are actually retracting the latch when you push, so you need to pull on the handle to take all the strain of the closed door off the latch and push straight into the hole.
If you shine a light in the hole and can see a slot about 1/2" in, then you have the wrong key - you need a flat one - either a narrow screwdriver that will go in or take a coat hanger wire and a hammer out to a handy rock or concrete surface and pound the end flat. You may have to file it to get it square enough to do anything.

Dreepsy: check my answer at one of the 2 other places that you've asked this same question. With the type of lock that you are trying to open, the 'key' that you need MUST have a flat part, because you have to TURN the twist lock that locks the inside door. A 'key' WITHOUT a flat part is for the type of lock that has a button that you push IN, not twist. I'm sure you're getting frustrated, but slow down. Comprendez-vous?

If they are the older style of bedroom door, a small flat screw driver will open them. --- That is about how big it will be, the 3 marks I made there. Might even be smaller. Home depot or Valu home center should have some of the keys also.
