is it just a cargo truck stop or an immigration stop?

The San Clemente Checkpoint on Highway 5 is both a cargo truck stop weight point and an immigration check point. It's real near the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant, north of the Camp Pendleton Marine Base (which is huge, and the only open land between San Diego and LA) and south of the city of San Clemente. All northbound traffic is slowed down by flashing lights before the checkpoint. Sometimes you will get there and find the checkpoint closed, so you'll just drive through without any visible inspection. But most times there are border patrol agents posted on each lane; they'll have you slow down to almost a stop, and then if you look ok to them, they'll waive you through. They can stop and question you and send you to secondary inspection if they don't think you look legit.

Highway 15, which is inland of highway 5, also has a similar border patrol checkpoint but it's not as fancy or high tech as the one on highway 5. Generally, the same procedures apply as above.

If you want to keep her out of a bad traffic hassle, then ... well, since you're on a train and enjoying the ride, why not just do the Union Station thing and make it easier for her? From Beverly Hills to Orange County (which would be halfway), she would be stuck on either the 405 or the 5 if she decides to go through downtown. I recommend she take the 405 because it's one freeway the whole way, rather than having to deal with the 10 east and the east LA interchange to the 5 south. After Oceanside, the next station is San Juan Capistrano (which is gorgeous, by the way), and after that it's Santa Ana and City of Orange ... but unless there's *miracle* no traffic, she could end up taking an hour or more to meet you. Depending on how much time you have, why not come up to Union Station downtown, and either eat at Traxx, or head literally across the street to Olvera Street for legendary Mexican food. This is a well known place, and security keeps the homeless to the periphery for the most part. Don't let that keep you from coming up here to see your friend. :D Happy pushing in 8 weeks or so, Momma

Yes, there's a North-bound stop just South of San Clemente and the San Onofre power plant. But I haven't actually been stopped or had to slow down there in years. Only big trucks are stopped and inspected.

What the first two people said is true. Have made the trip many times and there are checkpoints. It's not like a border patrol stop where they stop all the cars. It's more like you drive slowly through the checkpoint and are only stopped if the Border Patrol thinks there is a reason to stop you.

There's a immigration checkpoint near San Clemente on Hwy 5. Of course, they only stop the northbound cars.
