transmission to wheel interface.?
How difficult of a job is it ?
How likely will they try to rip me off and say other things are wrong with it?
What else goes bad when this part is defective ?

I assume you are talking about the CV joint? It is easier to just replace the axle. That way you spend more on parts, but a lot less on labor. And you have a whole new axle that should last you. good luck."
Reply >>> Yes the CV Joint.
How much will an axle cost ?
Does this repair require special tools and special experience ?
( can maroons do it ? )
Should the axle be new or will one from the junk yard work ?
In what ways can they over state the price by fibbing about the repair ?
How much will it cost ?

Your vehicle is front wheel drive...front wheel drive vehicles don't have U joints. They must have been looking at different vehicle.
Good luck!"

Quote >>> "Do you mean the CV joint? Usually the entire axle assy can be replaced with a rebuilt unit (Autozone, Pep Boys, NAPA, etc) or with a used assy (car-part.com appx $125.00). It's about an hour and 1/2 job IF you have experience and the proper tools (like the huge socket used to remove the spline nut), etc. Probably about 2.5 hrs if you're green but can turn a wrench."
Reply >>>> So I jack up the car, somehow remove the wheel, and somehow remove the axle and replace it.
What holds the axle in ? ( just the wheel assembly ?)

Quote >>> "Dave, Coast Cowboy is right...I was just laid off my job as a Ford partsman, after many years,on Monday. The CV axle from Ford would be quite expensive...I would do as he suggested,by obtaining one from a local aftermarket parts store such as Pep Boys or Napa..I used to purchase them for about $59.00...I can say that now...but expect to pay about $100-$125.00..unless you know a parts guy from any major dealership who would purchase for you and mark up only 10% or so. If you do not have the tools, however, you may need a technition to assist you,in replacing it.."
Reply >>>> YOU ARE THE MAN BOBBY !
I have hard data on the cost, I may go the route of a used part.
Is that wise or should I stick with new or rebuilt ?

I had estimate of $999.00 for a brake job on 4x4 and with all new parts, new tools, and three weekends to do the work I did it for $225.00 I don't think wrench twisters are worth $65 an hour..."

Some repairs require very expensive tools and a Master Mechanic.
Brakes and Bearings I can do.
I am not sure about this one. I will buy the manual and see what is involved.
Thanks again.

to have a mechanic do it would run $300. and up." (smiley george)
I R somewhatly mechanical and an Electronics Technician. I have bean messing with cars for many a moon.
One problem with shade tree mechanics is not having the proper tools or a proper maintenance facility. They cut down the tree I was gonna use so I will cut a bush and lean it against the car.
It looks like breaking the hub nut will be a bear without a torque wrench to properly replace the new nut.
Thank GOD I still have the trusty JEEP to drive.
My next new car >>> Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Any other car i will not buy.
( maybee a HUMMER some day )
