why do rumors spread so fast?

When something happens that is shocking, out of the ordinary or is considered life altering, people get excited and put aside their everyday idle chit chat to concentrate very heavily on the news of the moment. Since, no one wants to feel as though they are less important than the story or have no control over the impact it will have on their lives, some people compete to be the first one to tell it while it is fresh in their minds. Like "Telephone" no one wants to have egg on their face by getting some of the details screwed up. When that happens you get a furry of chatters aching to nab each and every person they come in contact with in hopes they get to that person first before anyone else does. If that person also has an inclination to be a competitive chatterbox it won't take long before people run out of people that will even listen to it.

As that saying goes "One person told two people. Those two people told two people and so on and so forth."

Two people are dead.

When someone has it in for you and is too scared to do anything to you themselves, they lay in wait for the day you slip up so they can pounce on your plight to exploit you like the windbags they are pushing your story to everyone that will listen in hopes to control the outcome of your fate just to hurt you. Which is very mean. In other words "All talk - no do."

Nobody likes being the last to know something. So, usually everybody listens. So, they can be in the know.

Rumors are usually harmful cause the people telling it only know partial truths and it is some times bent to enhance the image of the informant.

Most of the time it is a waste of time.
