I have them both set up with a wireless router and I want to know how to share files between the computers. I have a lot of music and pictures etc on the old computer and I want to put them on the new computer without going through the trouble of transfering them via flash drive or disk.. there has to be a way to do it using some kind of networking between the computers with the router... does anyone know what I'm talking about and how to do it???

okay,

on the pc that you have the files that you want to share,.. well, it'd probably be easiest to share the entire C: drive. Right click the c drive from "my computer" and choose to share it. Leave the preferences at the default.

From the other PC, go to my network places or whatever it is called on your version of windows and click on the tools tab. Map a network drive and navigated the network to the C: drive on the other computer. Set it to reconnect at boot and viola. You have access to the other computers C: drive.

You can use "file transfer"

You can enable "folder sharing" so that your music folders can be seen by the other computer on the network. Then transfer the files that way

You can use a cross-over cable to connect the two machines directly without going through the wireless connection and set up a connection that way also

The easiest way I have found is the following.

On the old computer, create a new file (I just make mine on the desktop) and call it something like Old Comp Share Files

Right click on your new folder and click properties

Turn on sharing

Then go to your new computer and do the same thing (just use a different name for the file).

Then find Network Connections and the shared file should be there. Anything you move into this new folder you should be able to access on the new computer.

Good luck!

You can buy a usb transfer cable, or a crossover ethernet cable. Or google "setup a home network" this way you can always share files easily by setting up a shared folder on both computers and dragging the files you want shared into the folder to sync the 2 computers.

once you have file sharing enabled, and you have set the permissions in the folder(s) you want to share (which is a lot easier than it sounds), you open a new explorer window in one of the computers and type, well I'll give an example:

say one of the computers is named "laptop1" and has a folder on the C: drive called "music". well as long as the two computers on the same router and file sharing is enabled you can go on the other computer and type into the address bar in an explorer window "\\laptop1\c\music" and it will be like you opened that folder on the other computer.

yeah go to the start menu and then programs then accessories and then wireless network wizzard and have a flash drive handy it will make the setting up the network between the two idiot proof.. so it takes about five minutes and is called an adhoc network and totally wireless an 802.11 communication between two machines..really its easy if i can do it you can too..

Setup a shared folder.

When you open My Computer you will see a shared folder. Any folder/file you wish to share must be placed in it.

You need to enable file and print sharing. If it's between XP and Vista, enable it on both. But on anything less (except 2000) google your OS with the word "file sharing".

Use your Help function on Windows to find out how.
