- 6a - b - 10b - 5a
-11a - 11b
(-11) (a + b)

(-6a-b)-5(2b+a)
Use distributive property with the -5, multiply it into 2b and a

you then get

-6a-b + -10b -5a

Add -6a into -5a, = -11a

-11a -b -10b

Add -b and -10b = -11b

-11b - 11a is the answer\ the simplified version ( what it asks for)

matthewj, The answer is not asking for an equality. Its asking to simplify the quotient, you can't just 'add' an equal sign in the middle of a problem >.<

But the rest was right =)

Pigley, also mostly right. But don't add parenthese, that puts one more step into the equasion. in other words, its not in its simplest form =(

why does everyone keep putting -11(a + b)... thats not the simplest form..

Part of an algebraic problem is ' Getting Rid ' of parentheses.

A basic problem on my old algebra homework is 4(a + b), the answer is 4a + 4b... not 4(a + b)

I suppose you want to simplify the expression. Here is how you do it:

(-6a-b)-5(2b+a) is same as

(-6a-b) - (5(2b+a)) => keep the minus sign common to 5(2b+a)

expand the term 5(2b+a) by multiplying 5 to both 2b and a
(-6a - b) - (5* 2b + 5 * a))

= -6a - b - (10b + 5a)

= -6a -b -10b -5a

grouping the terms with a and terms with b we get

-6a - 5a - b - 10b

= -11a - 11b = -11(a+b)

(-6a-b)-5(2b+a).This is the problem.
Soln:
Step 1:Multiply 5 with 2b+a.
You will get (-6a-b)-10b-5a
Step 2:Remove the brackets.
-6a-b-10b-5a
Step 3:Arrange all like terms:
-6a-5a-b-10b
Step 4:Simplify the like terms.
-11a-11b
Ans:-11a-11b
You can also write it as 11(-a-b).

expand out the brackets:
= -6a- b -10b -5a
collect the like terms together:
= -11a -11b
take one of the terms to the other side:
11b = -11a
divide both sides by 11:
b = -a

im not sure what you are being asked to solve but thats how i would do it!

(-6a-b)-5(2b+a)
= -6a-b-10b-5a
=-11a-11b
= -11(a+b)

(-6a-b)-5(2b+a)?
=(-6a-b)-10b-5a
=-6a-b-10b-5a
=-6a-5a-b-10b
=-11a-12b
Therefore,
-(11a+12b)
