Ice; as long as I dress up warmly from the ankle up this is no problem or even a challenge at all. I've been barefoot for over ten years including in winter, while it doesn't get that cold here there are some days of freezing weather every year. I walk some through the snow and on ice, and in fact have *less* problems with cold and numb toes than when I still wore footwear (especially the rubber boots I wore when I rode horses as a kid were a horror in winter, no matter how many socks I wore in them!)

If what is on the other side is worthwhile I would do either or both if it were not possible to walk around the obstacle, build bridge over it, fashion some covering for my feet, or somehow melt the ice with the hot coals. If what is on the other side is worthless I'd simply turn and go the the other way.

Frozen ice, the calouses on my feet would protect me from the ice sticking to my skin I think, but now way would they protect me from the hot coals.

If I were forced to do one, I'd rather walk on hot coals. (just hope it's not a mile walk). I see some benefits here than walking on a frozen water (ice)...like it's good to melt off unnecessary fat,..it's good for the flow of blood in our veins,..plus, blisters are easier to cure and not as dangerous as hypothermia.

Hot coals. As soon as I felt a sharp burn I could jump to the side of the coals, and at worst that would cause blisters (just like accidentally quickly touching an electric stove burner that is still hot after just being turned off). Ice, frostbite can risk losing toes.
