How is this different from an "editorial" in the US press?

You are pretty wrong. A leader is in fact the editorial comment usually written by the editor

I lived in London for almost 10 years from 1987 through 1997.

I'm pretty sure that "leader" is a term comparable to what we would call "front page". The difference is that we only have one "front page" where they have multiple "leader pages" at the beginning of their newspapers.

It has nothing to do with an editorial.
