I think perhaps you mean a flow cytometer? A flow cytometer is a laser-based instrument that analyses cells at a high rate of speed (several thousand per second), as the cells pass in a fluid stream past the laser. The instrument captures light reflected from the cell surface as well as the cell interior, and also fluorescent emissions generated when the laser excites fluorescent compounds that have been added to the cells. In this way it can produce statistical analyses of large numbers of cells in a very short period of time.

Most common uses of flow cytometer are cell analysis using cell surface markers, cell viability, cell cycle analysis, and cell sorting.
