Judging by the Q&A on this forum, as well as some anedoctal experience, I would say that most Democrats are socialists. They want government health care, higher taxes, etc. In short, they believe that the best solution to any problem is more governmental control.

Socialism is not a simple or straightforward philosophy, but, I would guess that most rank-and-file Democrats have basically egalitarian value systems that are not often offended by socialist programs and ideas.
And, no, Democrats may have socialist ideals, but they're still working more or less within the framework of the constitution. They're a far cry from Stalinism, or Hitler's National Socialism.

I don't think most of your average Democrats believe they are socialists. But the Democrats in power are very much going down a socialistic path. The average democrat gets their news from John Stewart and other blogs that feed them half truths and lies. They are group thinkers that vote with their heart and not with their brain. They are well meaning people that just need to be informed a little bit more to understand what makes our country the greatest in the world. Conservatism sadly comes with age now a days because of all of the liberal views fed to them(colleges,t.v., newspapers). I only pray that they come to understand what our forefathers in-visioned as they signed our Declaration before we become a Communistic/Socialistic country. God willing he will open their eyes and minds.

The thing is either you are a socialist or not. Too often, liberals in both parties believe in some socialist ideas. This does not change the fact they are socialists.
The average democrat is vanishing quickly. You have the base: unions, professors, teachers, government workers, etc.
The average guy is fed up with the party. The average Joe Democrat cannot stand liberals as much as conservatives. The problem has been Republicans do not stand for anything.

I get the impression that some very young people believe that socialism isn't so bad. Because they find this acceptable, I believe that they don't have faith in their future or that many opportunities will be available to them at this time.
The desire for universal health care only moves us into the same era as most other industrialized countries in the world. Socialism means that the government owns the energy, etc. People do not own their own property. Your job is determined for you. I think if someone in our leadership spoke of these things, you would hear a very loud outcry from 99% of the country.
The fact that our health care system is broken and that someone takes the approach to fixing it with a universal health care plan does not make them a socialist. The fact that they want to tax the oil companies does not make them socialists. The fact that they want a college education to be affordable rather than putting you in the poor house for many years does not make them socialists. The fact that they may take away the recently acquired tax breaks from the richest segment of society does not make them socialists. Except for the universal health care plan, the other things have been done in this country for many years prior to the Bush administration.
I would rather there be some approach to health care that is not a government run insurance program. There must be ways to make this more affordable. However, I do not agree that democrats are socialists.

unique Poster: solid grief... You mentioned "study the definitions and post your answer". I study your definitions... no longer your metaphors. in case you decide on me to study your metaphors, then make that the identify of the placed up. till then, end posing your question as a impartial question. on account which you incorporate dictionary definitions does no longer advise that this is "common and balanced". Um... to boot that it incredibly is a loaded question and a troll's rant, I only have one question: Why might you think of that the residences in a communist us of a may well be painted gray? I advise, in spite of in case you do in comparison to communism, why gray? ought to a communist (even one portrayed interior the "comedy of horrors" type which you present day) like colorings? Why no longer blue, or green, or... crimson (the colour traditionally linked with communism)? additionally, what's incorrect with a gray vehicle... silver is between the main nicely-known colorings for American autos on the instant. I advise, the question is stupid, yet the place did you come back up with the thought bicycles may well be gray? yet heavily, your "commentaries" have no longer something to do with the defintions you grant. the place on your definitions does it say you won't be in a position to have a crimson shirt, or a skateboard. additionally, the Arab leaders are not area of a communist state. some are democratic, others are totalitarian... yet none are communist. a extra suitable question: why do you initiate troll-ish rants?

Okay--socialist. Of the two of us, who's the one who wants to imprison Howard Stern, ban the Simpsons and Spongebob Squarepants, and burn Harry Potter books? You.
Who's the one who wants to have Grandma thrown in jail for trying to save fifty bucks on her meds by buying from Canada or overseas? You.
Who's the one who wants Prohibition brought back? You.
Who's the one who wants to outlaw birth control? You.
Who's the one who wants jack-booted thugs breaking into civilian homes with no warrant? You.
So which of us is the socialist? YOU ARE.

I don't think that your definitions of socialism and liberalism are very accurate.
And frankly, we're in bad times right now, following six years of Republican control of both the congress and the presidency, so maybe you have a skewered view of the Republicans, as well.

Hullo....anyone home in there? Stalin and Hitler were NOT Socialists...they were Nazi Communists.
....controlling their subjects with Charisma and progressive ideas....does waving under a "mission accomplished" banner in a flight suit count as the same thing?
Considering none of the dems ever had anything to do with Genocide, the answer to your question is NO.
