Or how long does it take for a bank to know that the check does not have the amount mentioned ,for exemple if you make a deposit to your account with a check , can the automaticly verify if there money on that check ,if it can't immadiatly ,how long can it take to see wheter if the check have money or not ?
I wish i made myself clear.
Thanks a lot!

If the check is drawn on their bank... yes they can.....

If you are talking about a counterfeit check, they can pick them up right away, and you go to prison for 10 years for try to pass the thing....

If you are making a normal deposit of a check that is drawn from a different bank, verification of funds comes at the same time of the transfer of funds. This varies, but usually occurs within 24 hours (except late Fridays & Saturdays), unless the check is drawn from an oddball bank in a rural area out of state or out of the country.

Often, funds can be verified and transferred at the end of the same day, if the check is deposited early that morning. That's the fastest it happens. In any case, a bank can always call the other bank over the phone to verify funds, but they would only do that if they were suspicious.

Now, a bank will usually put a hold on a deposited check from another bank (unless it's a payroll check) until the funds clear. The exception to this would be a longtime customer with a big balance and/or long proven history of transactions. They do this to prevent "Kiting", an illegal practice of writing and cashing a bad check from one bank, then writing other false checks from several different banks against each other to cover the original false check. It's much more difficult to kite checks these days, because of the increased speed of electronic transactions. However, it still happens and it's now a federal felony.

The bank can't necessarily tell when you deposit a check whether it's valid - it could bounce, or could be a forgery or written on a fake account. It could take up to a few weeks for it to clear, although most checks from within the country would clear faster than that.

So if you got a check from someone you don't know asking you to cash it and send them money from it, maybe keeping some for yourself, don't do it - that is one of the very common scams right now. A week or two later the check turns out not to be good, the bank takes the money back out of your account, and you are out whatever you sent to the person.

There's thousands of banks out there that sponsor checks. Therefore, your bank cannot immediately know if that check is real or fake.
After a few days, the bank will find out when they attempt to collect the money from the fake bank.
At that point, the account that the money was deposited would be withdrawn the money.
Then, you would claim fraud and hopefully, your money will be recovered.
But in the meantime, you take the responsibility.

are we kiting checks -- very risky - but some folks try it -- if both accounts are in the same bank it should take no more than the close of business that day -- if the other check is on a different bank it can take as long as 3 or 4 days!!!
