We use fly traps that you fill with water. After a few hours the bait inside will dissolve and I can guarantee you will catch the flies. You can buy them at Walmart or someplace like Lowe's or Home Depot. WARNING! They put off a horrible odor so place it away from your doorway.

for regular house flies: buy some fly paper in a strip and hang it from the ceiling in an open area. The flies will land on it and get stuck and die. You will have to replace the strip once you get it filled with dead flies though.
For fruit flies: just get rid of whatever is rotting away-they will follow it to the garbage can. Spray the area with lysol and you should be set.

If you can trap the little booger somewhere in your home or if they are on a porch, mix dawn with some water in a spray bottle and go to town, it is alot less smelly than raid. It works if you can get em while they are not flying. Or put a pool in you backyard, I have skimmed a ton out of my pool.

for outside...Off deck and patio works well. for inside I like to use a a hand held battery operated zapper (looks like a mini tennis racket) full fills some sadistic needs to get even with bugs...lol gotta loves the sparks that flies set off when they are hit.
