Ringo Starr. As other people have pointed out, Ringo is not the most technically gifted drummer that ever lived but he certainly changed the way drums were used right from the start. If you don't believe me, just go and listen to records before The Beatles appeared and compare with what he was doing and what other drummers did afterwards. He was the first rock drummer to to make real good use of his tom-toms and he has a unique way of playing the hi-hat. He is natuarlly left handed but played a right handed kit which accounted for the unusual fills he came up with. For examples of his power and inventiveness listen to 'Money' from With The Beatles, 'Rain' (b- side of Paperback Writer), 'A Day In The Life' from Sgt Pepper', and 'Come Together' from Abbey Road. All defining moments in the history of rock drumming.

There's a good story about Keith Moon attending one of Billy Cobham's drummer workshops. After Moonie demonstrated some of his "technique", Cobham apparently told him something along the lines of "I don't know what you're doing, but keep doing it." You can't teach originality, folks, and that's where the greats truly shine! Give me Moon over any number of wankers that get praise in spaff like Modern Drummer Magazine. And if you're going to give extra credit to the guy from Def Leppard for his one arm, how about Moulty of the Barbarians with his claw hand, 20 years previous?

Without a doubt the late Keith Moon. Not only was he a manic and outstanding drummer, but he was a totally lunic as well. A great comination for a rock star - although it does not usually end well!! He was the driving force for the Who's music and made their concerts truly powwerful.

It has been said that Ringo Starr was uncanny in the way he could keep a beat going or a specific rhythm. While he may not have been as inventive as some others, his steadfastness surely contributed immensely to the Fab Four's success. That wasn't the only group he played in either.
