We just purchased a 27' travel trailer. The trailer weighs 5500lbs empty. I am having a 10,000lb hitch put on my '99 F-150 and will have sway bars. My truck is a 4.6L V8. Am I insane to attept to tow this trailer or does this seem reasonable? Will driving while towing it be a white knuckle affair? Thanks!

It's going to struggle on grades, but on flat ground it'll be no problem. You're going to need the Easy-lift hitch set up. Keeps your back bumper off the ground.

You WILL need to have working brakes on the trailer or it will be a BIG problem stopping in an emergency stop.

(you may already know all this, but I threw it in anyway)

WARNING!!

Do not tow with O/D turned on, or your tranny will DIE!!

Two weeks ago, on a trip to Las Vegas, I saw a guy pulling a trailer with smoke billowing out from under it. At the next rest stop, I asked him if he had his truck in O/D while towing and he said "yes". Luckily, the trans was still OK, just a little warm.

You can check the towing specs on your F-150. It will most likely do the job. However, if you want to do it right, then get a F-250 or 350 with the power stroke diesel. You may not even know that the trailer is behind you. They will pull, all day long.

Check the owners manual for the specifications on how much weight you can tow. Remember, when you add water, clothing, camping supplies and food to the trailer's weight, it will most likely exceed what you can safely tow.

I think it will do it alright, but put a lot of stress on it, especially for a long haul.
