Because society is run by men and all they think about is a woman's body.
Their wives have probably put on a few pounds since they got married and they want some cute skinny thing to look at in place of her.
Beauty is only skin deep.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
It's what's inside that counts.
Men don't get it.

I think todays American Society is the most allowing and tolerant of overweight women. Curves and some "junk in the trunk" are now more accepted than ever. This could possibly be why people are being more lax with diets and gaining weight. Obese women on the other hand are still stereotyped to not care about their bodies nor health. Is it thought that when you care about yourself, others are more willing to care about you. So with that theory in mind, it makes sense why there is still prejudice against overweight women.

I remember sitting in a women's studies class, and everyone was going on about weight, and one person mentioned Roseanne. I listened to the conversation, and finally said--hey, wait a minute! Why Roseanne? Why not her TV husband? It's like even people in women's studies didn't click into to their own biases, which floored me. There is virtually no comment on overweight men in the media, but an overweight woman--actually, normal weight women--are targets for anyone who feels the need to say something. It is, and always has been popular culture that dictates what is fashionable or unfashionable in terms of every area. In Rueben's day, women who were 300 pounds were considered sexy. In many other countries, bigger women are considered attractive. But in North America, god forbid if a female gains a few pounds. Males still seem to be able to carry a few extra pounds without much comment, but not women. However, I do believe it is unhealthy for anyone and it should be discouraged, but not in a way that decreases a person's self esteem--and, if a person is truly happy being overweight, that's fine too. There is significant discrimination against women who are overweight, as everyone knows--why women more than men? Because women are supposed to be perfect in every way. Yup. Not too hard to live up to that kind of standard, is it?

Everywhere you go there are all these slim and beautiful women. Look at the media, you would never see a overweight person. I guess overweight people are not considered to be attractive

Because it is unhealthy. There are a select few who cannot help it. Its genetic or they have a disease or disability that prevents them from losing the weight. But the large majority are lazy and stuff their faces too much....just like many over weight men.

A lot of people don't realize that obesity isn't about just what you eat....they have no idea that having weight or a "bigger than paris hilton body" can be beautiful and you can be healthy at the same time.....we cannot choose our genes but we can choose a healthy lifestyle, even if it doesn't get us into a size 0 jeans!! :)

because people in general are biased against overweight people. it is a documented phenomena called the "fat bias" people generally get better first impressions of attractive people. we are more likely to think someone is a good person who does nice things for people if they are good looking instead of fat and ugly. its sad but true, if you want to blame someone blame the media i guess

it should be noted however that not all cultures value the skinny lady

Who's to blame?

My money's on the heroin chic trend of the 90's.

Seriously though...many probably will not like what I say when it comes to this, but I think Feminism is partly to blame, here's why...

Traditionally a little weight on a woman was seen as VERY attractive. The wider the hips, the better due to child bearing. Men were instinctually attracted to women who's body type lended itself to being more fertile than the sickly looking size 00's of today.

But when 2nd wave feminism came along, it was declared that no longer should the identity of a woman be defined by her ability or lack thereof to bear children. To a certain extent the idea of child-bearing all together was considered bad...(birth control anyone?)

Anyway, society had to shift it's view of what was attractive, and it only makes sense to me that it would be the opposite of tradition, as many things have come to be post 2nd wave feminism.

Because society is focused on women being beautiful and thin and look like top models everyday. I personally think that thin is unattractive. Women should have curves!
