I think your math is off, I count 1800 pencils for all the class.
Are the pencils turned in to the teacher at the start of the school year ? When I was in school I carried at least 3 and often 5 daily.

First, I doubt that every kid was asked to bring pencils. Some get asked to bring kleenex, or note paper, or other stuff.
Second, 2 pencils per kid could have been gone in the first week. Kids love over-sharpening those sickers.
Third, when these supply lists come out, maybe a third of the childrens' parents actually care enough about education to actually supply the stuff.
Fourth, This stuff is all available at dollar tree or just about any discount store for next to nothing. What is your real concern about this?

Our school supplies pencils. Last year we had 15 students. I purchased 150 pencils. We went through all 150 pencils. That included eraser caps being stuck on these pencils after the erasers had worn down and the ferrules being chewed upon. So that isn't that many pencils for that amount of students. Usually it's construction paper left over, from what I've found. And glue. About half a bottle of glue left over. Kleenex is sometimes left over, but is used for the next year. So it always ends up getting used.

Actually, they probably used more pencils than that. There are about 180 days in the school year. The majority of kids lose their pencils by the time they go to lunch!! I seriously do not know what kids do to their pencils, but I do know that teachers are constantly replacing them.

Isn't 60 x 30 = 1800? There are 180 of school (In California). 1800 pencils / 30 students = one pencil used for three days (per student).

I was told that items are only returned IF you put your child's name on them, otherwise they go into a common pool for everyone to use. Of course, that was several years ago, when my son was still in public school. Nowadays, he uses mechanical pencils.
60 pencils divided by 9 months is about 6 or 7 pencils per month. To me, that seems excessive, but then, kids always seem to be losing them, so maybe not.

That's a lot of pencils. But I can believe it.
I can also imagine that not every kid brought 60 pencils.
If I have anything left over, I use it the next year. Trust me, I'm not building my retirement log cabin on my students' leftover pencils.

I would imagine that not much is left over. And then what little bit is left over, there's not really a way to divide it into 30 students. So it's used for the next year.
You also have to take into account that not all parents can afford to buy school supplies for their children. So some of the supplies you buy helps to provide for other children.
