This question has always perplexed me. You don't carry the dump around with you afterwards but flush it. You are getting rid of the dump not taking it. The new vernaculuar should be "I'm deciding to LEAVE a dump".

Exactly! I've wondered this too but I think it's kind of an abbreviation of "I'm going to take a dump to the toilet and leave it there." That's my guess.

It does not mean they are taking it to the dump. they mean, by defecating that they are "dumping" the waste out of their body. "I have to take a dump" is slang for going #2.
