The ticking noise is probably a relay clicking, as you don't have enough voltage to start the car. You probably have a dead battery, or almost dead. Do the lights work when you turn the key to try to start it? If so, the battery may be good, if they go out, it's probably your battery at the least. Check your battery cables on the battery, make sure they're not corroded or powdered up or loose. Tap on them gently, with the lights on, to see if it causes the lights to dim or get brighter. May just be unclean terminals. Or you need a whole new battery. Good luck!

The ticking noise is the starter solenoid kicking in and out. Your battery does not have a full charge. Either the alternator is bad or your battery is shot.

The shift lock, I don't know. Does that keep you from putting it into reverse or from using a lower gear, like 2nd or 1st gears?

The clicking noise is the starter trying to engage the starter the battery is week, You may need a tune up and all the filters changed that will help , but the battery is the main problem first, hope this helps,

Sounds like the noise could be your starter and perhaps you need to change the spark plugs and wires also the shift lock is what keeps you from accidentaly putting the car into reverse or park when driving

If the ticking noise is loud than your engine just broke. It happened to me before. I heard some loud noise in the engine and when i went to the mechanic he said that my engine just died.
