My girlfriend told me she is pregnant, and also admitted that she had been cheating on me. Now we get to get a paternity test, I would like to know before the birth, so we know whose name will be on the birth certificate.

I agree with Melissa. The amniocentesis procedure would tell you but it is invasive and can cause miscarriage. It will also cost you a lot of money.

Wait until the baby is born. You can hold off a few days to fill out the name on the birth certificate. Or you can just use the mother's last name and then it can be changed later.

A paternity test done during pregnancy is only done if there is a MEDICAL reason to do an amniocentisis. Otherwise, you have to wait until baby is born. Contact your hospital and find out in advance procedures for paternity testing as it needs to be prepaid anyway. The testing done in the hospital is usually completed within 2-3 days.

I've been wondering this, too. Since I have recently found out I may be pregnant. What would be the father doesn't believe I'm pregnant and I'm sure will try to accuse me of being unfaithful.

I have heard about it though. But I figured it's unlikely. My suggestion is when the baby is born go to the court for a paternity test and they will change the last name if it is not yours.

Amniocentesis is NOT the only way to get a prenatal paternity test done. Check out http://www.dnaplus.com

Once your girlfriend is atleast 13 weeks pregnant, she can have this test performed. She needs to call the lab at the website listed above to arrange for collection at a facility close to her. They will take a sample of her blood, which poses little to no risk, and isolate fetal cells which have been discarded into her blood stream. They will then use those fetal cells to create a DNA profile for the baby, which they will compare to the potential father(s).

The father(s) may submit samples of either blood, hair, or buccal (aka cheek) swab.

This test is quite expensive, and not covered by insurance. No paternity test is covered by insurance, however, as it is not a medically necessary procedure. Even amniocentesis (which is NOT done solely for DNA purposes) related paternity tests will not be fully covered by insurance-the medically necessary portion of the test may be, but the paternity test will not.

I wish you all the best...

most places will not do anything until the baby is 6 months old. i have heard of a paternity test before the birth but never actually ever heard of anyone doing it. sorry you will just have to wait till the baby is 6months old. Also just wait the baby can have the mothers name. also its a very risky procedure and your girlfriend probably wouldn't want to do it.

You can do it during pregnancy, but most doctors will not do it because it can cause a miscarriage, just wait until the baby is born, and take blood, it is so much safer.

It can be done but is not safe at all. It's extremely invasive and can cause miscarriage. Most often they use amniocentesis which is inserting a needle into the placenta to draw out amniotic fluid to be tested.

the only way to do this is with an amniocentesis. the doctor would have to decide to do this. but most likely you will have to wait until the baby is born.
