I have to disagree with you there. I'm against mandatory millitary service. I think that if someone doesn't want to fight and kill other people, then they shouldn't be forced to. It's unfair and unjust to send someone to another country to fight in a war that they're against in the first place. I think the politicians should be sent overseas to see what the soldiers go through. Then maybe they'll try to make war a last resort and find ways to settle conflicts peacefully.

I hear your perspective....I don't agree. I guess because I wouldn't want my sons to have to serve in the military when they have other dreams and goals for themselves.
I know many who have served and quite frankly, there is a hardness about them....like they went in with morals and respect and came out dysfunctional....institutionalized. I don't wish that on anyone. As well, the individuals I have known have a lack of respect for women and homosexuals to a degree that they didn't have before attending the Marines.
My brother went into the army and the same things happened to him where once he was loving and compassionate and when he came home all he could do to hold a conversation was to talk about himself and the infintry unit.
This is only my experience and even though I say many it is a far cry from the actual number of service members.
There are a number of ways to build character and respect...I think it needs to start in the home from the moment of birth.
It would depend on cirumstance as well....like if we were all mandated to serve...will our country give us free health care and other benefits? I would consider mandation if there were some true changes to benefit this country all the way around.

It would definetely give people a different perspective of what is really going on in the world. Plus, it builds character and responsibility. It also brings you closer to your family and make you value what you have because you see what others don't. However, like Prince Harry, some people can't serve their country.

This is the Israeli situation--national security demands that all participate in the country's protection. I tend to agree with you! Of COURSE, I am 78 yrs old and have never served our country--I DID work for the NSA in DC, and feel good about this service. I DO think that we all need to contribute to our country in some way, in order to pay back for the freedom and privileges that we have!!! NOT just leave it to a few men and women. Freedom does not come FREE!

While there are definitely other factors to be considered, one reason FOR mandatory military service is that people in the United States would be much more involved in the political process, particularly when it comes to attacking other nations, if they knew they or their children would be sent to fight. In other words, I believe that the chances of war would LESSEN because people would be more critical of attacking other countries if they were personally involved.

My friend had to go through that, they made him eat mud during a training exercise. and he even told me it was a waste of time, and totally stupid.
I guess the concept of it is justifiable, but when it's carried out by corrupt politicians and unaccountable military officers. it's just a waste of time for most people... plus the rich will simply bribe they way out, or move away from the country when the time comes, and move back in when their age requirement is past.

That is wrong, because it would go be against many people's morals. Like I'm a vegetarian I won't even eat or harm an animal, you expect me to do it to another human being (not the eat part of course). Some people aren't made to fight and kill, a lot of people aren't capable of killing another human, and you would send them to a war, where it would be expected.

If it is done like the Swiss or Israelites yes other wise it's a waste of time.
Some days I'm prepared to restrict voting to active duty and stand by reserve personal.
