Wow. WHen I was a kid (1960's) Keds tennies were all the rage for kids. All the kids had tennis shoes with the little red KEDS rectangle on the back of the shoe.
I had no idea they were still around, much less so used by older people. Maybe older people remember Keds from when they were kids.

well, keds is a pretty old company. there are trendy styles like the faded champions that mischa barton promotes but there are also classics that are often favored by the older folks.

I live in CA and still see young girls wearing them.
I'm not a fashion expert but I'm 46 years old and don't wear them.:)

its true about the in/out fashion thing. but also, I think people are tending to associate loose/comfortable things to be unfashionable (which sometimes they are :P)
