I've been to several places where poverty was just the way of life. It was my father's job to make sure those people would have something to live for. He did a great job. It made me a different person too. I am glad I am not vain. This is one thing about me I can say for sure.

How impoverished? By American standards, I have been impoverished my entire life.
I have also been to the Philippines; they have it rather hard financially. They take baths, wash their clothes, keep their house clean, but have little for food, have small houses (I am talking about those that have a hard time), no access to health care...But they are still friendly and kindly.

I've been to Puerto Plata and while some of it was nice(the resort we were in) we went into the main part of town and there were lots of old shacks and poor buildings that people lived in-it was very sad.
