2001 Honda Civic with only 21,000 miles
No problems with the car until recently when I've noticed I really have to push down on the gas to get it to accelerate. I can hear the engine kind of struggling, too, especially on an incline. Ride is not as smooth, either. No recent maintenance except for oil change.
Could it be the fuel system needs to be cleaned? TiresPlus todl me they could do it for $89.99, but I'm hesitant to pay for something that might not necessarily be the root of the problem. I wish there was a way to get someone to physically look at the fuel injection without charing me $50 for a "diagnostic engine" test. What's my best bet? I heard Autozone does a free engine scan...

would it be worth it to buy some fuel cleaner and see if that helps?

Could be the intake filter, using bad gas, more weight in the car, and/or the heat outside. You should definitely get it checked out. There are a lot of places that do cheap or free diagnostic tests, you should look around your area.

this is going to sound very basic, but have you checked the floor mat in the car? If it is a 'factory' mat there should be two hooks at the back under the front seat. if the mat is not hooked down it can work itself forward and prevent the accelerator pedal from going all the way down. It happens more often than you would think!
if the floor mats are not Honda mats the percentage is increased.
the fuel system cleaning is not recommended by honda and won't have any effect on your concern.
Autozone will check for codes to see if the on-board diagnostic system has detected anything wrong with the fuel control system. If the check engine light is not on then the scan won't show anything.
you may want to check the air filter to see if that is restricted and replace it if its been more than 1 year.
you may also want to try a higher octane gas for one tank to see if that affects it. I have an LX model civic and it runs a lot bettter on 89 octane than on 87 and it seems like a different car on 91 but I don't need to pay for that all the time. the LX is no tiger normally on an incline but it seems that the higher octane fuel helps.
you shouldn't have any need for anything involving tune ups, valve adjustments or spark plug replacement at that mileage.
try the floor mats, air filter and higher octane fuel. if you still think something's wrong, take it to a Honda dealer and ask if they can have the shop forman drive the car with you. They'll be honest and tell you if you have any reason to be concerned if they feel anything abnormal. Almost every dealer will have the shop forman ride along with you without charging you.
hope that helps give you some ideas

You could try fuel injector cleaner along with some octane boost to clean out the lines, is your car standard or auto, could be a problem with the clutch. One more possible cause is a bad batch of gas, sometimes gas companys put water in there gas it would do the same thing

Did you pay too much for this car only to find out it breaks down like any other car? Why does everyone think Honda's are better than every other car out there?

Sounds like a dirty fuel filter. If you feel comfortable replacing it by yourself it would be a cheap thing to try. Be careful and read up on how to do it becasue they are under pressure with gasoline.

it may cost a bit but go ahead and clean the fuel injectors and have some1 check ur fuel rail and replace the fuel filter but might as well go for tune up spark plugs ,wires...etc

that model civic was known for the camshaft to walk in the cylinder head, therefore the cam position sensor will not pick up the signal from the end of the shaft.... causing it not to have any power... is the check engine light on?
