A robot is any device capable of performing commands autonomously or on orders by a human. Technically, every unmanned probe we've launched into space is a robot.

Generally, a "robot" is expected to move, so that means the Russians landed the first robot on another world - the moon - in 1969. We've landed 3 rovers on Mars, using a "bouncing" landing - a parachute slowed the device in the atmosphere, then retro rockecs were fired to bring the craft to a hover, then the payload was released, encased in balloons - and dropped. It bounced around, then stopped - and when it opened, the rover would crawl out.

While just as valuable to science, other probes - like Huygens landing on Titan, and the Venera probes landing on Venus - taught us about those worlds, though the probes weren't designed for locomotion.

The current trend in space probes is to give them more brain power - the ability to make decisions on their own; currently, they simply respond to orders & instructions we give them.
