We're all different, so I suggest you try this for yourself.
Select a straight walkway somewhere, preferably in your
own backyard, or people may have strange thoughts about
you, if you experiment in the street! The longer the path,
the better, but at least 30 to 40 feet should be enough.
Mark a start line where you will begin walking, with the front
of your shoe on the start line. Take 10 steps and mark
where the front of your shoe finishes. Measure the distance
you took, in feet, and then divide by 10 to get the length of
one step. You should do this several times and then take
an average. Then divide your step distance into 5280 to find
how many of YOUR particular steps are in a mile.

For example, 10 of my steps is about 27.5 feet.
Therefore 1 step = 27.5 / 10 = 2.75 feet.

So 5280 / 2.75 = 1920 steps to the mile.

The word mile comes from the Latin root mille, which means one-thousand (c.f. millimeter, milligram, etc.) In the Roman legion, one mile was the distance a soldier could march in one-thousand paces, one pace being two steps. Of course, these were regulation Legion steps of exactly 2 1/2 feet, drilled into troops by hours of marching. Normal people are not so disciplined. The length of one's step varies.

You're much taller than an Italian of the 4th century, so I'd guess for you 'd have somewhat less that 2000 steps to the full mile. Maybe 1900... 1950... something like that.

5,280 feet in a mile. The average person walks about 3 feet per step. So you take 5280 divided by 3 and you come up with. 1760 steps.
