The twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity are the latest in lunar rover equipment. They have exceeded their planned life by 90%! That is huge, they should have been dead after only 90 days not years.

The same technology that the rovers use to drive themselves on Mars is the technology that was being tested on the DARPA grand challenge in the desert with the robot car race. Currently we operate the space rovers by telling them where they need to go and letting them run, due to the distance it could take 4 hours to directly command the rovers.

All the rovers, the tiny pathfinder, the lunar rover, and the LEM were all tested on the Earth first, in the desert where the conditions are similar to that on the moon or Mars. Right now there is a proto-type Martian Habitat in operation in Northern Canada. The people wear space suits and use ATVs to simulate the work on MARS. The suits weigh as much as a standard space suit would on Mars, they aren't pressurized, but the cold climate has its own demands and is very similar to that on Mars. Or at least the best we can simulate on earth.

Anything done in space has to be tried and tested on the earth first. For example the astronaut construction crew that is trying to build the space shuttle has spent hours and hours in the swimming pool that simulates zero-g. They were the same space suits and do the same work to see if something can be done, and the best way to do it, and to practice. By the time it gets into space the technology has been tested at least 5 times.

People think that NASA is making a hasty decision on not repairing the Space Shuttle. Since the damage was noticed NASA expanded the mission by 14 days and they are testing the repair in the simulation pool right now to see the risks and hazards. If the Canada Arm gets too close to the underside of the shuttle it could multiply the damage by ten. Space exploration is hard work and takes a lot of skill. The reason the astronauts are so good, is because they have such high standards and train them so much.

The same is true for spacecraft. Voyager, Galileo, Pioneer and all the other robotic spacecraft were designed built here on earth then tested hundreds of times to see if they would work.

NASA’s latest plan is to send an unmanned rover to Mars with a drill that can reach down 20 meters in their search for water. Right now the prototype is still the size of small car so we need to develop and work on it more. NASA may abandon the tracked wheel or the wheel concept to use a walker design. It depends on the state of modern robotics. Walking is very hard, it took Asimo years to learn how and he still has a hard time. The NASA walker will have four legs, but it will still take some pretty good programming to run it. The idea of using a walker is that it can walk over boulders and go where the current rover design can’t go.

Check out Popular Science, that’s one way I use to keep up. I also look at the space news articles posted on My Yahoo, you can change the settings easily and add content like technology news or space news. This will clue you into the latest developments.

Wikipedia is also a great resource and I have listed a few articles for you.

there's a baby's song that is going "London Bridge is Falling Down." NASA at the instant spends plenty money (over 0.5 its budget) on manned (and womaned) spaceflight, with little or no decrease back to humanity. the gap Station replaced into regularly geared up to offer the shuttles some thing to do. the gap return and forth application is basically a company welfare scheme for the aerospace marketplace. Conversely, effects from the unmanned area flights and the satellite tv for pc-borne structures have been very magnificent! merely pass to googleearth...
