Never heard of it on oranges -- my husband swears by sprinkling a little salt on cantaloupe. Makes sense though -- you're correct, salt brings out the flavor in things -- what you describe as 'sharper'.

Salt brings out sweet! That said, I don't like salt on an orange, but it's wonderful on a banana or watermellon!
Ever tried peanut butter on a pickle? YUM

I've never tried that, but I can see why you might like the taste. My mother loves to sprinkle salt on tomato wedges. I have tried that and it's pretty good.

Some people enjoy the sweet/sour combination that fruit and salt together make.
